When you reach the middle of Danseoksan Mountain in Geoncheon-eup, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, you can see a huge rock wall rising high in a U-shape, forming a stone chamber. It is thought that the roof was artificially covered here to create a stone cave Buddhist sanctuary, and there are 10 statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva engraved on the rock face, creating a spectacular view.On the northeast side of the independent rock face, there is a statue of the Standing Buddha with a height of 8.2m, which is embossed. The round face is full of smiles, and a small two-tier topknot-shaped hairdo rises above the head. U-shaped folds are evident on the clothes covering both of the shoulders, and a belt knot is visible between the open breasts. The right hand is raised to the shoulder level, the palm showing, and the left hand is down, with the fingertips facing down, the palm showing. On the east side is a carved six-meter-high statue of a bodhisattva, with no clothes on the upper half of the body. The left hand is lifted up and placed on the chest, and the right hand is holding a precious bottle in front of the body.
Although it is not clear due to severe wear and tear, one bodhisattva statue without a halo is carved on the south side, forming a triad along with the two Buddha statues in front. On the eastern side of this bodhisattva statue, more than 400 characters are inscribed, which reads, "One Maitreya stone statue and two Samjang Bodhisattvas were carved at Sinseonsa Temple."On the north rock face, a total of 7 Buddha, Bodhisattva, and human figures are shallowly carved. On the back, from the left, a Standing Buddha statue, a Standing Bodhisattva statue without crown decorated with jewels, a Standing Buddha statue, and a thinking Buddhist image sitting cross-legged are placed side by side. With the exception of the thinking Buddhist image sitting cross-legged, all of them point their left hand to the east, showing a unique posture leading them to the Sakyamuni Buddha. At the bottom, two offering statues that look like offering alms while wearing hats like beoseon, traditional Korean socks and a monk were engraved, which are important data in estimating the appearance of the Silla people. These rock-carved Buddhas, which show the style of Buddha statues in the first half of the 7th century, are significant in that they not only show the original form of stone cave temples in Korea, but also provide important data for understanding the trend of religious belief at that time.
